I had worn contact lenses for over twenty years and during this time had increasingly followed the research into laser surgery. I always used to think how wonderful it would be to be free of contact lenses and glasses. I was extremely shortsighted, my right eye was -7.00 with an additional astigmatism of -1.50 making an overall prescription of -8.50. My left eye was -7.00 with an astigmatism of -2.00 so giving a prescription of -9.00. So without lenses or glasses my vision was poor at best. I also had a prism requirement, my prescription for this being -2.

About eighteen years ago I had a partial detached retina in my right eye. One of my on-going concerns with laser treatment was the risk of a further detachment due to the necessary pressure that is applied to the eye during the procedure.

However, upon becoming totally intolerant of wearing contact lenses early last year due to the onset of dryness in my eyes and not being happy with the transition to wearing glasses full-time, in June 2004 I went for a consultation at the Midland Eye Clinic to enquire about laser surgery. The upshot was that after an examination I was informed I was not suitable for laser surgery as my corneas were too thin. I was devastated as I had set my hopes so high on this treatment however, obviously not at the cost of jeopardising the vision I had.

Not being one to give up easy I made further enquiries and saw another eye consultant, forever hopeful of finding a resolve to this obstacle and of being able to ditch or reduce my dependence on glasses.

During this time, the name Accuvision came up in the same sentence as ‘on the leading edge of technology’. Being female I admit to not being technical and do not often understand the way technical things work. However I DO know advances are being made all the time moreover, that my best shot of obtaining my goal was to seek advice from an clinic I had heard to be at the forefront of technical advances.

Accordingly, I attended Accuvision in London last June for a free consultation. What initially struck me was the calm, therapeutic ambience of the clinic. There was nothing cold and clinical about it.

My consultation was with Vik. It was thorough, I was not rushed and I was given every opportunity to ask as many questions as I wanted until I happily understood the answers. Moreover, Vik’s manner was extremely kind, personable and professional but most importantly he was open and honest too about the potential risks of laser.

I had tried not to get my hopes up about Accuvision accepting me as a suitable candidate for laser however, I was over the moon when Vik told me that my previous detachment placed me at no further risk than any other myopic patient due to the years which had since passed since my detachment and the way it had healed. Further, due to having the most modern laser and way in which the laser procedure is conducted by Accuvision, my corneal thickness would not present as a problem either. My corneal thickness was 525 microns (right eye) and 534 microns ( left eye). My pupils were 7.0mm.

I understand that British Medical regulations dictate a corneal thickness should not be reduced below 270 microns per eye. I understood from my consultation, that Accuvision like to maintain a thickness of at least 300 microns per eye whenever possible, thus building in an extra ‘safety buffer’.

I felt so assured by the openness and honesty that was imparted to me during my consultation that on 1st July 2004 I underwent the AccuWave LASIK treatment.

On the day, any anxiety or nerves seem to be predominantly overtaken by my excitement of hopefully reducing my dependence on glasses. Vik was as personable as when we first met, along with Mike who genuinely took an interest in all clients and who was so approachable and friendly. Before the procedure, Nick Jacobs the surgeon introduced himself and I couldn’t believe how friendly, patient and reassuring he was too (this has not always been my experience with surgeons).

The procedure itself was fine, I truly felt nothing at all and it was all so quick. The only thing I did feel at one time was a pressure on my one eye, outside of this I honestly felt nothing. I appreciate some guys out there will equate such a procedure to having your head chopped off, but to normally anxious guys and to fellow females, from my own experience, I can honestly say the procedure is totally painfree.

I stayed in a hotel in London overnight and had to have the requisite hourly eye drops. The next morning I returned to the clinic and had the ‘bandage lenses’ (normal contact lenses) removed – again painfree. Then that was it! I was off home.

At my first weeks check up my left eye was 20/20 and remains so today. My right eye had a residual -.75 myopia giving an unaided vision equivalent to the driving standards but not the 20/20 desired. The corneal thickness in both eyes was still over 300 microns.

As such, in October 2004 I underwent an enhancement procedure on my right eye as due to the techniques of tissue conservation that were undertaken in the first procedure there was sufficent corneal thickness to safely carry out the enhancement. I understand that this is due to the kind of laser used by Accuvision which removes less corneal tissue and allows for a thinner ‘flap’to be lifted than other lasers used in the UK.

The enhancement resulted in giving my right eye better than 20/20 vision.

I was realistic in my expectations of laser surgery. I would have been delighted to have just substantailly reduced my dependence on glasses but to obtain the result I did was indeed the gift of sight. Further, whilst I do not know how it is possible, my reliance on my prisms has been substantially reduced.

All further follow up appointments have since been at the Solihull clinic which opened at the end of last year. My primary care there is through Nick Dash who is extremely personable, professional and approachable.

I waited some months before submitting my comments to this website as I wished to give readers an opinion of the aftercare offered by Accuvision aswell as the procedure itself.

Whilst I do not intend to in any way suggest that Accuvision is some sort of miracle clinic, I truly cannot speak highly enough of their expertise and the care and service they provide both pre and post op.

If you are considering laser surgery then think long and hard and take on board any potential risks, for any kind of surgery carries a degree of risk. Further, you may pay slightly more at Accuvision however I feel you are being assured of the best treatment and of being treated as a person, not just as a number.

It has been seven months now since having laser eye surgery and quite possibly the best decision i have ever made. I previously wore glasses and contact lenses for twenty years and found it such a restriction on my life both personal and also career wise. I always thought about having the treatment but never got round to it until i decided to change jobs. I did alot of research and liked the look of accuvision. I was not disappointed. As soon as i arrived for the assessment i felt comfortable and could not wait to have the treatment so miuch so that i made an appointment there and then! On the day of the operation i could not believe how quick it took and how painless. My original vision was -3.00 and -3.75 with a huge amount of astigmatism but now i am 20/15! Unbelievable, just recently come back from holiday and what a relief it was to wear normal sunglasses and not have to put those horrible plastic things in my eyes. Thankyou accuvision.

Having had the treatment my eyesight is now better than 20/20 – something I never thought I would ever have. However, I have to say that I was a very nervous patient to say the least, and the procedure had to be stopped once because I was so petrified! But the surgeon persevered and the nurse had her hand crushed by me. I came out of the surgery and had to wait in the waiting room for about 15 minutes – not knowing that the whites of my eyes had haemorraged – they were bright red, which put the frighteners on a few people who were waiting to go in. I was told this happened very infrequently and would disappear on its own. It didn’t hurt at all – just like bruising to my eye. I was concerned that it would be permanent as it was still there after three weeks. But to be honest I can’t remember the day I woke up and the redness had gone. All in all, this op is totally worth it, I was just a very nervous patient who freaked a bit!

I’d been interested in the possibility of refractive surgery since I heard about it ten years ago. I know four people who’ve had it done and all of them raved about it so I started investigating the various clinics offering the treatment.
My prescription was -2.5/-3.5 with a fair amount of astigmatism.
I booked a consultation at Ultralase in Birmingham. It was a bit hurried. Probably because of the amount of people waiting to be seen but what put me off them was being told that I couldn’t have Wavefront because my pupils are about 3mm and their technology wasn’t up to it.
Then I emailed Accuvision about whether I’d be eligible for Wavefront and they said in principle it should be no problem and they could further advise if I went in for a consultation, which I arranged.
During that hour or so, I was impressed with the professionalism and emphasis on realistic expectations. Vik also mentioned the outstanding results they have with patients, so despite the warnings of complications, I left there feeling very confident that I’d found the right place.
On the day of the operation (October 25th), I didn’t have to wait too long until the surgeon was checking my eyes and I was soon escorted into the laser room.
After lying down on the couch, my eyelids were clamped open and then I could see a red-speckled cloud and a green dot that I had to fix my attention on. The only discomfort was when the flap was made in the right eye. After what seemed a few minutes both eyes were done. It was a surreal rather than scary experience!
I had to keep my eyes closed for as much of that day as possible but in the evening the itchiness had subsided.
Almost 9 months on, my vision is excellent. It was a lot of money but worth it.
Thanks very much to everyone at Accuvision.

I’m a dirtbike journalist and was fed up of contact lenses getting lost every time I wiped my eyes when full of mud – not good when you’re in the middle of a race.
So I had laser surgery two weeks ago, the custom lasik in both eyes. My prescription before surgery was -4.5 and -3.5, with a stiggy and abnormally large pupils. Throughout the whole process the team were great. I had the consultation and the actual surgery all in one week. During the actual surgery I did experience more than average discomfort and even though I was fairly distressed the team, surgeon and nurses were fantastic, holding my hand and reassuring me constantly.
I now have perfect vision in both eyes, although my right eye is extremely dry and as a result blurs easily at the moment, but I have been told this will settle down as healing for individual eyes is different.
I cannot recommend these guys enough for their professionalism and patient explanations from start to finish. Thanks!

I like many others have spent the last couple of years pondering if I should have this operation. My eye sight is -4.5 in both eyes, I am 42 and still fairly active. 2 weeks before my operation my girlfriend told me I should go for it, which thank goodness I did what I was told!! From the initial consultation through to surgery it was 10 days. From picking up the phone to the operation I must say that Accuvision were the most professional company I have ever come across. Throughout they manage your expectations and ensure that you are comfortable about the whole process. I now have better than 20/20 vision and just over one week after the operation have just completed a 100km charity walk across the South Downs in 27 hours for Gurkha Trust / Oxfam, this was without glasses or contacts and it was bloody amazing!! Thank you Accuvision.

I HAD CUSTOM LASIK SURGERY ON THE 9TH JUNE 2005, I DID A LOT OF RESEARCH BEFORE I DECIDED TO GO AHEAD AND READ SEVERAL REVIEWS LIKE THE ONES THAT YOU SEE POSTED ON THIS SITE. MY EXPERIENCE IS VERY SIMILAR TO MANY OF THOSE WHO HAVE CHOSEN TO HAVE THEIR TREATMENT AT ACCUVISION.IT WAS VERY PROFFESIONAL FROM THE FIRST CONSULTATION TO THE PRESENT TIME. MY MAIN POINT OF CONTACT WAS MR NICK DASH, HE HELPED ME ALONG AND MADE IT VERY EASY TO UNDERSTAND THE PROCEDURE AND WHAT WAS INVOLVED. LIKE MANY I HAD BEEN TOLD BY OTHER CLINICS THAT MY PRESCRIPTION OF R +4.5 L +5.0 WAS NOT TREATABLE, BUT I WAS ASSURED BY ACCUVISION THAT THEY COULD TREAT ME. FIVE WEEKS ON AND I STILL CAN’T BELIEVE THAT I NOW HAVE 20/20 VISION. A LITTLE BLURRING FOR THE FIRST TWO WEEKS BUT NOW IT IS FINE. MANY THANKS TO ALL THE TEAM, AND IF YOU HAVE A SIMIALAR PRESCRIPTION GIVE THEM A CALL, IT REALLY HAS CHANGED MY LIFE.

I have just had my 6 week check and found that my vision is 20/15 – wow! I knew it was good but not that good! Before surgery I was -10 short sighted and relied on specs from waking up until actually crawling into bed – this operation has changed my life. I didn’t realise that the world was in focus in the distance – always pushing up my specs. The team at London are great – making you feel really at home and giving a personal service. I mean how many people do they see each week – and they still remembered my christian name. I would fully reccomend this to anyone – the best money you will spend in your life.

I had wavefront treatment to both eyes on 2nd November at the London clinic. My prescription was -6.5 & -7.00 and now less than 1 week later my eyes are settling down very well with no need for glasses or contact lenses anymore. I had my 24 hour check up with my vision not quite 20/20 but hopefully by my 1st week check up it will be. I am able to see very clearly which includes reading, working on the computer and watching TV.

The team were all very helpfull and made me feel at ease at all times. The actual treatment took about 20 minutes and there was only a small amount of discomfort for just a few minutes on each eye.

I am very pleased with the results so far and with the overall service Accuvision provided and would recommend them to other people.

I will send updates as my eyes settle a little more.
