Long-sightedness (Hyperopia)

Long sight, clinically referred to as Hyperopia, is when objects close up appear blurred or when close work is possible but becomes uncomfortable due to eyestrain and fatigue after a period of time. From time to time headaches may also occur. However, distant objects such as road signs are perfectly clear.

Often, people can overcome this blurred effect when looking at near objects by over exerting the muscles within the eye to achieve a clearer focus. Of course with time, this tires the visual system and the eyestrain and headaches will arise.

Hyperopia is caused by a variation in the shape of the eyes - namely the eye being too short from front to back, or the power of either the cornea or lens being slightly weak. The result is a mismatch between the length of the eye and its focusing power. Therefore the light rays do not meet at the retina and images are not seen clearly.

The cornea, the clear window at the front of the eye, accounts for up to 80% of the focusing power of the eye. It is this part of the eye that can be altered through laser eye surgery to alter its refractive properties of the and thereby reduce the hyperopia in the eyes.

We at Accuvision are leaders in the treatment of all degrees of hyperopia. The combination of advanced technology and highly experienced surgeons at Accuvision mean that we are able to correct up to +8.00 of long sight.

Between the age of 40 and 60, the lens within the eye gradually loses some flexibility. This is a normal age related change called presbyopia, or age-related long-sightedness. This prevents the eyes from seeing near objects clearly and therefore reading glasses are needed. Accuvision can reduce your dependency for wearing reading glasses using Monovision correction. You can read more about advanced reading vision correction for presbyopia here.

Is Laser Eye Corrective Surgery Right for You?

At Accuvision your safety and total satisfaction are paramount. Laser eye corrective surgery may not be suitable for everyone and a successful outcome is dependent on many factors which must be carefully considered.

Laser Eye Treatment and Eligibility

Whether or not laser treatment can be performed on your eyes depends on a number of factors that need to be assessed by our eyecare specialists at your initial consultation.

Although the majority of people who come to us are eligible for treatment, due to the high prescription levels we are able to treat, we may decline to treat you if the outcome cannot be accurately predicted or if laser eye surgery treatment is likely to cause complications to your sight. Your lifestyle and occupation may also be an important consideration.

In general, the suitability of our laser eye corrective surgery procedures for you depends on factors such as:

  • The degree of optical error
  • The thickness of your cornea
  • The existence of any eye disease
  • The size of your pupil
  • Corneal mapping data
  • Wavefront analysis results

You should ideally be able to answer YES to the following:

  • Do you suffer from shortsightedness, longsightedness or astigmatism?
  • Are you over 18 years old?
  • Is your prescription stable?
  • Are your eyes healthy and free from any eye disease?
  • Would you rather not wear glasses or contacts on a permanent basis?

Please note that this is only intended as a general guide and there are always exceptions. Detailed analysis of your eligibility for treatment using laser eye corrective surgery can only be achieved at your consultation, but please call us if you wish to discuss the current condition of your eyes and their suitability for treatment on 0845 000 2020.
